12.1: Three Dimensional Coordinate System

A 3D axis has a vertical z-axis. The origin, (0,0,0), is at the intersection. These three planes divide the space into eight parts, called octants. The first octant is created by the positive axes. Points can project on to any of the planes (xz, xy, or yz).

Equations in 3D

In 2D, a graph of an equation involving x and y variables is a curve. In 3D, an equation in x, y, and z is a surface. This is x=4x=4 in R3\mathbb{R}^3 represents {(x,y,z)∣x=4}\{(x,y,z)|x=4\}. Any combination of xy has a z value of 3. This equation is parallel to the xz plane.

Distance formula in 3D

The distance, ∣P1,P2∣|P_{1}, P_{2}|, between points P1(x1,y1,z1)P_{1}(x_{1},y_{1},z_{1}) and P2(x2,y2,z2)P_{2}(x_{2},y_{2},z_{2}) is: ∣P1,P2∣=(x2−x1)2+(y2−y1)2+(z2−z1)2|P_{1}, P_{2}|=\sqrt{(x_{2}-x_{1})^2+(y_{2}-y_{1})^2+(z_{2}-z_{1})^2}

Equation of a sphere

The distance between the center and any point on the sphere is the radius. Thus, r=(x−h)2+(y−k)2+(z−l)2r=\sqrt{(x-h)^2+(y-k)^2+(z-l)^2} r2=(x−h)2+(y−k)2+(z−l)2r^2=(x-h)^2+(y-k)^2+(z-l)^2 Equation of a sphere with center C(h,k,l)C(h,k,l) and a radius rr is: r2=(x−h)2+(y−k)2+(z−l)2r^2=(x-h)^2+(y-k)^2+(z-l)^2

Finding radius and center

Find the center and radius of this example: x2+y2+z2+4x−6y+2z+6=0x^2+y^2+z^2+4x-6y+2z+6=0 Complete the square to get (x+2)2+(y−3)2+(z−1)2=8(x+2)^2+(y-3)^2+(z-1)^2=8. The center is (−2,3,−1)(-2,3,-1) and the radius is 222\sqrt{2}.
